If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I am an avid peruser of arena and stadium walls. My latest find puts all the other signs, slogans, and advertisements to shame.
Consider “Genesis Employment,” as seen during a recent Coventry City Premier League match.
What could that possibly mean? Or portend?
Could it mean that the Big Guy has decided to do a make-over of the universe and would like to have an extra pair of hands to help? Considering what a mess mankind has made of it, it would not be unreasonable to imagine the Big Guy calling a halt on things and determining to start over.
What would the instructions be to the new hiree? “I,” says the boss, “will divide the heavens and the earth. You will be in charge of populating the land with animal life. Things went a little awry the first time, and so we ended up with beasts looking like anteaters, hippos, giraffes, and, of course, elephants. (Though I’m kind of fond of those pachyderms—so maybe give them another shot.) And, of course, there was the screw up with the unicorns, who somehow missed the boat; bring them back. The big question is mankind. Should I bring them back?”
“May I make suggestion, sir? If you decide to give them another chance, don’t start them off as vegetarians.”
“Ha, ha. Good thinking, my boy. And perhaps not start them off in a luscious garden—maybe at the Arctic Circle.”
“What about snakes? One of them screwed up things the first time.”
“As I recall the Irish got along without them. So don’t bring them on this time. My previous assistant thought that a tsetse fly or two would be a fine joke to play; he’s now down in an eternally hot spot.”
“That insect caused a lot of trouble.”
“So, what do you think? Are you coming on board?
“I’d be proud to.”
“Oh, one thing more—it’s a six-day week.”
